VINTAGE REPORT
The 2009 vintage started wet, but as the rain fell during the stage of ‘flowering’ the crops were lower throughout the Nullo Mountain vineyard. The rain did stop, but when it stopped, it stopped completely which let the fruit ripen steadily as there was no rain interrupting the process. The result of this dry finish to the season meant that harvest was a little earlier than previous vintages and an increase in natural acidity in the berries.
WINEMAKING
Hand picked fruit was fermented with two separate treatments; one at hotter temperatures in an open vat to give the wine texture and mouthfeel, and the other kept in cooler temperatures with a longer skin contact post ferment to retain the natural aroma of fruit. The ‘cap’ (the skins and the like which float to the top during fermentation) of both vats were hand plunged to ensure the optimum amount of skin contact.
